Solos and Learning
I did my third overnight solo this past weekend! It was a much smoother time and I felt more confident. That’s probably because I’ve already done most of these trails and because I’m also more sure of myself.
While trying to find a close trail, about 15 miles, camping permitted, not touristy, and all of the other silly requirements I was bouncing around, Derek suggested that I do the local State Park. Yes, love that, but the Overnight Trail there is about 6 miles. Naturally, Derek dared me to just hike every trail in the park before making my way to the backcountry trail. Also as naturally, I said yes.
I’ve done all of these trails, aside from the Overnight, dozens of times, although, never in one day. It was a fun exercise in exertion control. I usually pop onto a trail and just go until I’m there. I kind of had to pace myself here to avoid any risks. This is especially true because our park only has one backcountry site. I’m alone alone.
The first day put me at nearly 30,000 steps and I hit an easy 8,000 on my way out. It was a great hike. I met a few encouraging fellow hikers. The Park Rangers seemed sweetly concerned for me and even gave me the night shift ranger’s number so I had contact if I had any trouble.
The camping portion is always my least favorite. I love hiking and I enjoy going through all of my tasks once I get to camp. Tent goes up, bear bag goes up, firewood is found and processed, I cook, I clean, I set up my bed, and then I read and journal until I’m sleepy or the fire dies. These are just items on a checklist. Once the work is done though, I do get bored, hence the stacks of books, pencils, and my Kindle.
Oh, I got a new tent as an early birthday present! It’s River Country Products, just like my original one, but this is a one person, one trekking pole, 2-layer model. This tent goes up easy once you understand it, and it weighs under 3 pounds. I’m in love with it and brainstorming what I’m going to name it.
All in all, it was a good trip. I used my new tent, put a lot of miles down, and worked on enjoying the moment while sitting around the tent. Like everyone else out there, I tend to focus on lists and what I have to do next, or even chores that are waiting for me. I’m really working on just sitting in peace. I’m still learning, a lot. I think I’ll get there eventually. In other news, we have our next trip soft planned. We cannot wait to share it with you! Enjoy these pictures at the end of this post. I’m also still learning how to upload photos on here. So. Much. Learning.
We still have ice!
Did I mention all of the recent rain?
This was a cute bridge.
